The article begins by stating how vital teams are to an organization’s success. Being part of a team offers the chance to combine resources to achieve more goals than one individual could accomplish on their own. Subjective patterns are discussed throughout the article and how they play a role in the team process. The process of emergence is discussed and described in detail. Two forms of emergence include compositional emergence in which team members behave identically, and compilational emergence where team members act out independent duties.
The article then discusses individual attributes and how to measure differences within the team. Certain ways to enhance the team and its process include continuous interactions, individual performance, trust and communication, and workflow routines. Feelings about fellow team members can affect the team’s performance, especially when team members are left in the dark or treated as though they are less than. The article references a statement made by a professional basketball player that states he “is not going to be babysitting” when a younger player is drafted to his team. Immediately, mixed feelings can occur and have a negative affect on all other members.
The article closes by offering that research recommends that subjective patterns can be beneficial to teams, even though struggles occur. Confidence in each member enhances the team as a whole. The study suggests that mutual understandings develop over time and that it is important to keep an open mind. All individuals may perceive the information differently. Having a group of individuals that have different views can be a great thing once the team process and vibe get in tune. Practicing the subjective patterns discussed can bring positivity and complexity to the team building process.
