100 Years of Progress

A periodical examination of an employee's work performance and

contribution to the firm is known as a performance appraisal. Performance

evaluations are used by companies to discover which individuals have

contributed the most to the company's growth, to monitor progress, and to

recognize high-achieving personnel.

Scholars and practitioners have been interested in assessing people's

performance at work for hundreds of years. Recently, there has been a

surge in interest in the practice of performance management. Although the

two themes are plainly linked, they are not the same. Employees are

assessed by some judge (usually a supervisor) who examines the

employee's work along a set of parameters, provides a score to that

evaluation, and then usually tells the employee of his or her official grade.

Organizations frequently use this grade to make a range of employee-

related choices.

Performance management encompasses a wide range of activities, rules,

processes, and interventions aimed at assisting people in improving their

productivity. Performance assessments are the start of these programs,

but they also involve feedback, goal-setting, training, and incentive

systems. As a result, performance management systems start with

performance review and then focus on increasing individual performance

in accordance with strategic goals, with the ultimate goal of enhancing firm

performance.

This article will focus on the challenges that have arisen as a result of the

two processes, as well as how they have evolved over time. This is an

examination of 100 years of performance appraisal and management

research, focusing on articles published in Journal of Applied Psychology

but also including significant work from other journals.
